This video is from the same platform as the "TED Talks". The Allegory of the Cave is a story about how there were prisoners that were trapped in a cave their whole lives, only to see shadows of people, walking by the cave entrance, on the walls of the cave. From these shadows, the prisoners name them as to what they think they could be. They believe the shadows are real objects that could be touched. One prisoner is freed and he comes to find that the shadows were just reflections of what is actually real. From watching this video, I interpreted the Allegory of the Cave as a way to explain that truth and opinion are not always the same thing. The Allegory of the Cave is connected to Plato’s Theory of Forms and basically says that like shadows on the cave walls, things in the physical world are flawed reflections of ideal forms, such as beauty. Therefore, what I think is beautiful may not be the same as what someone else thinks, but who is right? Plato doesn’t have the answer, but he wants people to question it and not blindly follow those around them.

    1. The video was very informative. I thought that the Allegory of the Cave was explained well and it was easy to interpret. A part in the video that really stuck out to me was that the story of The Allegory of the Cave is an analogy of what it's like being a philosopher trying to educate the public. He goes on to say that most people aren't just comfortable in their own ignorance, but hostile to anyone who points it out. I can understand the analogy because it's like trying to explain to someone the factual truth about something but they don't want to believe you because they may have grown up thinking else wise.

    2. I thought that this video was very and informative. I thought that his ideas on creating a perfect society though ideas like Justice, Truth and Beauty was very interesting. Plato’s analogy of being a philosopher was really cool because the way that Plato described made it very easy to understand. This is a very good analogy because trying to get people to learn new things is difficult because a lot of people are ignorant and will violently reject the teacher like that did with Socrates. I really liked the analogy because it’s informative and very relatable.

    3. This video was very interesting I really enjoyed watching it. One topic I found to be very interesting right off the start was about Plato's Allegory of the Cave. This basically means that the real world around us is not perfect, what we see are flawed interpretations and also subject to personal opinion, much like shadows on a cave wall. Truth and reality are not always the same thing. We all see things in different ways, and no one opinion is the correct one. The author of this video did a good job at explaining this allegory. Not only does this allegory explain the difference between truth and reality, but it compares to how a philosopher teaches.

    4. As I was searching for videos I also came across this video. This video, with the illustrations made it easier to follow along and understandable. In the allegory of the cave Plato demonstrates the problem that philosophers face as educators. Most people do not always accept what is real versus what isn't, like the shadows. What was once clear to the man has become hard to see, this shows that there is a possibility for change in the thinking. But though this change is possible it isn't always accepted quickly and may take time to understand. This video helps form a quick understanding of the allegory.

    5. "Life is like being chained up in a cave, forced to watch shadows flitting across a stone wall..." I was surprised by the limited number of videos on Plato. After 2400 yrs, in this information age, lack of videos on Plato seems to "shine the light" on some of the very points this ancient was trying to make. This video was effective at presenting a brief introduction to Plato's complex Allegory of the Cave and Ideal Forms. I like the unabashed vocabulary use of "either too stubborn or too ignorant." Both the language and the visual styling of the video broaden the video's appeal.

I found and watched the video: The Cave: An Adaptation of Plato's Allegory in Clay. It explained how there are prisoners chained in a cave. The only thing that they can see is what is in front of them which are shadows of the things behind them that are unknown. A prisoner is then released from the cave, he was able to finally see the world for what it is and it changed his perception of the world from what he thought everything was. The released prisoner wanted to share his discoveries to the chained prisoners inside the cave. But they dont recognize the released prisoner anymore because he is a distorted shadow to them and his words echo making it hard to understand him. In the end the video says that this of course doesnt make anything outside of he world any less real. My interpretation of this video is that there is a difference between belief/opinion of something vs. the actual real truth and knowledge of something. Once the prisoner was released his beliefs/opinions changed when he got out in the world because he was able to gain more knowledge and the truth.

    1. I think this was a great video, Julie! I interpreted it the same way, but the last line in the video made me think. So much of what we see in the media today, is what the producers or the writers want us to see. For example, if an article is published saying that there is no poverty in the world, there could potentially be those who have never experienced poverty and only read this article and believe it. But clearly if they were more educated, they would no that this article is not true. It is just an opinion published. The truth is that poverty does exist, but because people will never experience it, they don't know that. To them, everyone is wealthy in their surrounding world. But that doesn't make poverty any less real to those outside this world.

    2. Julie, I thought that you found a great video. This video was called, The Cave: An Adaptation of Plato's Allegory in Clay. I liked how the video demonstrated Plato's story. I interpreted the video the same way. There is a difference between belief/opinion of something and the actual truth of something. I like Kate's example of the media and how the writers/producers only publish things that they want us to see. I watch a TV show that is called, The Real Housewives. It is a reality TV show where it films the lives of those who are rich and famous. The show only airs the good side to their life, making it seem that they live a perfect life. This can somehow influence viewers into wanting a life like theirs. However, the show does not film the rough times in their life and the struggles they may face. Therefore, I support Kate's opinion on the media and how they show only what they want the viewers to see.

    3. I thought this was a great video, it was very thought provoking. The last line was really deep, when it said "this of coarse does not make the world outside of the cave any less real". I agree with everyone's interpretation however I have a different view as well. It makes me think that he is saying just because you cant see something, or will never understand it, doesn't mean its not there. For example when captain peters said that the people in Afghanistan don't even realize there is a war going on, but there is. Just because they don't know doesn't make it less real . I really enjoyed this video, and I agree with everyone's opinions.

    4. this was an interesting video. I thought it really made you think about things. such as are we all in our own caves when we don't understand other people and there cultures? do we all have to be more open to the world? i think this is a very provocative video and i think it was a great find.

  4. I found this video about Plato's life and his theory of immortality. This idea was to help people become in a state of eudaimonia or fulfillment. He then constructed four big ideas. Plato's The first big idea is to think more and know yourself. His second big idea is the let your lover change you. Good qualities are essential but he says you shouldn't love each other exactly how they are right now but rather we should be committed to educating each other by seducing the other to become a better version of themselves. The third idea is to decode the message of beauty. Everyone likes pretty things they educate are soul's and show important truths that balance us. ugliness makes it hard to be wise and kind to others. His fourth big idea is to reform society by replacing democracy and we can do this by thinking rationally.

    1. Laura,
I really like this video. I too found this video while looking for something to post. I especially found that Plato's theory of "know yourself" and to not "act on impulse". He's right. money should not rule the world and you should have your own beliefs and be able to express yourself without being judged because they are out of the social norms. Social norms should not dictate the world and how people act. We get dragged around by our feelings and we think people are going to react when we express our feelings.

The video I found is called Plato: Biography of a Great Thinker. This video discusses the life of Plato and briefly describes some of his works. The video discusses the fact that he was taught by Socrates who inspired him particularly Plato was inspired by Socrates idea of pursuit of knowledge and virtue. Then Plato went on to be a Teacher of Aristotle. The video discusses that Plato grew up during the Peloponnesian war and saw political chaos, and after Socrates execution which Plato tried to stop, Plato became disgusted with politics and dedicated his life to philosophy. This video discusses his works briefly including the view of condition of human kind through the Allegory of the cave. This video highlights on key points in Plato's life.

    1. I also found this video. I like how the video gives an overall general history of Plato. I had very little information about Plato and I found this very interesting, especially his birth and growing up. When Plato offered money to save Socrates I feel like that speaks to how valued Socrates was to Plato. Overall I found this video very informative and appreciated learning more about Plato.

This video is called Plato's Theory of Forms (Beinnger). I think it is a good video that puts it in more simple words. The video discusses Socrates as well. Also the use images and flow charts that help guide you through the information. It is a short video, but its nice to have some images with the information that we have been reading about.

Then this video is just a short little video that is fun. It was some music with it that is funny and just uses word to describe Plato simple for a beginner.

    1. I really liked this first video because it was made for an audience who does not know much about philosophy, much less Plato, which includes me. This video discusses Plato's career and his most famous teachings as well as touching on Socrates and his teachings as well. This video lays a good foundation for one who is beginning their philosophical learning.
The second video was also helpful in that it was brief and simple, yet touched on all the major aspects of Plato's teachings.

    4. This video interested me a lot and how Plato views life itself. His views and teaching give you the basic understanding of why he think people think the way they do. It tell us how his life was growing up as a young philosopher and how influential Aristotle became to him that began most of beliefs. Being a student gave him the general idea of why we think and have questions about everything. He had a sense of understanding that there is no true meaning to everything but we question it because thats how we come about things and learn to know. This video gives a broad understand from start to finish of his famous "Forms" which is an outline that everything is subject to exist and chance and that there is no solution or unstoppable force to change that fact.

This video is a short and general biography for Plato. I think it sums up his life, writings and how his school came to be very well. Some main points mentioned were that Plato was given the finest education Athens had to offer. He focused on politics and writing of tragedies. Plato was present at Socrates trial. He founded his famous academy for his philosophical teaching. His writings deal with historical events and Socrates is his main character in a dialogue. Neo-Platonism was the great arrival of early Christianity.

    1. Jake I like the biography of Plato portrayed in this video. i thought it was cool how Plato was given the best education that could be offered in Athens. Some other main points I enjoyed where, how Plato was at Socrates trail, and how he focused on politics. Socrates was his major character in almost all of his dialogues.

    2. I also watched this video which did a really good job summing up Plato's life in a short video. I think that having the best education in Athens helped him in becoming the great philosopher he was. I found it interesting that he first agreed with Democracy but then after Socrates was sentenced to death on false charges, he questioned the whole system. In all the studying we have done on Plat I still find that The Academy seems to be one of the most important things that Plato did during his lifetime. Also, The Diologues" seem to be really important considering they became the basis of his teachings.

I found a very interesting video about Plato dealing with what he thinks is the most efficient society and how to establish who will rule. What would an ideal state look like? Plato had a whole new outlook on social structure and government. The ideal society guaranteed justice, led by a philosopher king called a Kallipolis. Plato suggests a structured social order with aims to minimize corruption and maximize justice. Plato believes in the “common good” of the group and individuals working together in order to utilize resources most efficiently. Those who value justice and truth would rule and take control of directing resources and any political effort. Therefore, once a society achieved this, everyone would have a better quality of life and increased social justice.

    1. Jake, this video was very interesting and provided a lot of information about Plato's life.

Plato was devoted his life to one goal: helping people reach a state of eudemonia, or fulfillment. He came up with four ideas for fulfillment. His first idea was to think more, and to not go off popular opinions, to really know yourself. He believed that you needed to subject your ideas to examination versus acting on impulses. The next idea for fulfillment was to let your lover change you. Plato believed the person you are with should have the qualities that you lack and the person you are with should help us become the best version of ourselves. The third idea for fulfillment is decoding the message of beauty. Plato stated that the things we find beautiful are the things missing in our lives and those things help us educate our soles. The final idea of fulfillment is to reform society by finding people in Athens to replace the old leaders with wise and good people who model good development and have a proven record of public service. Plato encouraged people to end democracies to prevent people from voting until they think rationally, until they become a philosopher.

    2. Jake I really enjoyed this video, it was very informing about Plato's life. He had one goal which was helping others to reach fulfillment. He defined fulfillment in four ways: 1.) to think more and don't go what is popular, but think yourself. 2.) let your lover be the one who changed you. He believed in the common saying opposites attract, and how you should be with someone who has the characteristics that you lack. 3.) decoding the message of beauty. Plato believes what we think is beauty is what we are missing in our lives, it is how we educate our soles. 4.)reforming society. Plato wanted to end democracy until people who vote thought rationally.

    3. I also came across this video in my search before realizing that it had already been used. I enjoyed that the video made the application of Plato's life easier to understand so that it could reach a wide variety of audiences. The basic outline of the four main ways to achieve fulfillment. His four ideals on how to reach this fulfillment were to think more, let your lover change you, decode the message of beauty, and reform society. Plato thought that people didn't use their common sense but instead they use environmental factors to make decisions. He thought that people should engage in Socratic conversations that were engaging and thoughtful. He believed that in your relationships you should choose someone that has qualities that you do not have and that will help you develop into a better person. Plato was the first to ask why we as humans are attracted to beautiful things. He came to the conclusion that these beautiful things send us messages about the "good life" which is desired by most. Plato was also concerned with how it would be possible to create a society of fulfilled people. He wanted to start choosing people who were recognized for good works to become what he called "guardians." To achieve this he created a school which was also focused on academics, but also being kind. He believed that democracy wasn't working for Athens because voters were not educated enough to make the decisions that are needed to choose a great ruler. I agree, this was a great video.

    4. I think this was a great video that focused solely on his biography. This was the same video I found and I thought it was strait forward. The video summarized Plato and his life, including his writings. Plato focused on politics and writing of tragedies. Plato was disappointed at the time with democracy. He had mistrust when Socrates was placed on trial and sentenced to death. He then founded his famous school, The Academy. The Academy was focused on philosophical teaching.

I found this short video that quickly sums up sums up Plato's life and what he believed. It was a video made for kids to understand, so it includes some definitions. Even though some of these definitions are easy to understand and do not necessarily need to be defined, I think that it adds to the understanding of his philosophies better. The video brings up his idea of a Utopia and that "government and social conditions" could be perfect in a place like this. It also adds that Plato was Socrates student and Aristotle was Plato's student. These three philosophers are the building blocks of all philosophy and philosophical thinking. The video also describes his "aristocracy of merit." I found this idea of his very interesting on how he thought the world should be ruled by the "best and wisest people." This makes me wonder if he felt that he was one of these people?! That he should be helping run society and the world.

    1. April this video was very helpful, thanks for sharing! It was short and sweet but covered major points in Plato's life and his ways of thinking. I also liked how this video defined certain words throughout the video that were helpful in understanding Plato and philosophy. I'm sure Plato being the great philosopher that he was considered himself to be one of those men, and that he should help deliberate on the ruling of society.

    2. I like how this video has a lot of information in a short amount of time. I like how the definitions are used and stated, it reminds us what they are and if we forgot it helps us understand. It talks about Utopia, where the government and social life are both perfect. Then it goes on to talk about the tree of Socrates to Plato to Aristotle. Those three are the building blocks of philosophy. It later talks about "aristocracy of merit". It was a different thought because the world being ruled by the smartest people isn't always the best thing.

    3. This video was very informative. I learned that what we know about Socrates comes mostly from his student Plato. This was because Plato wrote down his teachers ideas. This video was very informative in giving me background on Plato. For example that Plato came from a very wealthy and powerful family and that his name was actually Aristocles. I thought that it was interesting that he left Athens for more than a decade after Socrates died and he returned to start a school. I thought that this video was very helpful in understanding his philosophies and how Plato wrote about utopias. I think that it is interesting how no government has ever adopted his ideas but his philosophy influenced many leaders.

    4. I also watched this short summary of what Plato's life consisted of and how he became the person he's been known for today. Plato and his teachings were that of philosophical review making a point about the understanding of life itself. Once he became familiar with that understanding he took his knowledge to a different level politically making his name very well known. His concepts were that of dialogue between two people and raising young minds that are well educated that all people had the same and equal opportunity. This video makes you put thinks into a different view and understand that his views are still used to this day. Taking young minds and transforming them into to brilliant minds that one day will be passed on. Thinks are done a lot differently today but the concept still stays the same. Taking the smartest minds of the young people and making them leaders somewhat seems like a good idea thats how Plato though, even though that's not whats best. He nbelieved that the smarter the better, but in all reality life is much different from today. This video gives you a huge understanding of the concept of why Plato believed the mind is what matters.

This is a really great video that takes you through the most prominent aspects in Plato's life. It started with talking about Plato's ultimate goal. This goal was to help people reach what he called "Eudaimonia" which means fulfillment. It then went on to talk about the relationship between Plato and Socrates and how Plato mentions Socrates ideas in a few of his 36 books he has written. It then talks about how Plato believes there are four big ideas that will help you live a better life. Those are 1. Think More - not just following the social norm but thinking about what choice you want to make and why, 2. Let you lover change you - not just loving someone for how they are when you meet them but love the greatest version of themselves and finding someone who has the qualities that you lack, 3. Decode the message of beauty - this is the idea that beautiful things educate our souls because they represent qualities that we lack, 4. Reform Society - have politicians and rulers become philosophers. The video summed up Plato's life by taking about The Academy, which is Plato's learning center where he not only taught math and spelling but how to be good and kind.

    1. I also found this video and felt that it was really interesting! Unlike his teacher Socrates, Plato wrote many different books. One thing I found neat that was he tries to incorporate Socrates into his work whenever he can. Plato's ultimate goal was to help people in reaching what he called Eudemonia, meaning fulfillment. He believed that achieving this "fulfillment" required four basic ideas. First, to think more. This is described as taking the time to think about things on a more personal level as to why you take the actions that you do, not just going along with everyone else. Second, let your lover change you. This means loving someone for who they really are and how they are right now, and being dedicated to helping each other "become better versions of themselves". Third, decode the message of beauty. This idea means that we see things as beautiful because they contain qualities that we ourselves lack. Fourth, reform society. Plato spent time thinking about how the government should really be, and how society could better spend time creating fulfilled people. This idea brought way to the formation of Plato's Academy.

    2. this was a very interesting video! i really like the background on what Plato believed in and what he thought about tings such as "Eudaimonia". The part I agreed with most was the think more. because i don't think people think about things they do in life. I think a lot of people just go with the flow and don't really ask the question "why am i doing this?"

  12. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=patos+allegory+of+the+cave

I found this video of Plato's cave allegory. Plato believed that philosophy was more than just an abstract idea; it was a concrete belief to live and die by, a therapy for the soul. The allegory of the cave was written by Plato to compare the effect of education and the lack of it on our nature as human beings. He describes a group of humans living in a cave with no natural light or source of education other than the shadows on the wall cast on the wall by the object within the cave. One of the people find a way out of the cave into the outside world and run back in to the cave to try to explain and share the details of the beautiful outside world but none of the cave dwellers understood and became very angry and plotted to kill him for his new found knowledge. Plato is implies that humans before philosophy are comparable to the cave dwellers before the knowledge of the outside world. For those who decide to focus on their way of thinking and try to explain it, this reaction can always be expected from those who have not and aren’t familiar with philosophical teaching and thinking. Great video!

I think this video does a phenomenal job of connecting human nature to Plato's points of view and how one can understand his way of thinking based on what he spoke and taught. I love how it gives an evolutionary look of how people have evolved their ways of thinking and interpreting human nature and intangibles. Great find Courtney! I was so mesmerized by the Zelda-themed action of this video that I found myself forgetting the topic of the video every few seconds. Since the object was to learn about Plato, I was not so sure I liked this video until it offered something I did not obtain from any of the others I watched. In one sentence, it offered an easily understood transition between The Allegory of the Cave and Ideal Forms. "If the object is more real than the shadow, how do we know that there isn't something more real than the object?" The short video proceeds to illustrate illumination is not only misunderstood but may inspire violence in the unenlightened. Ultimately, I found it to be an effective video.

It harps on what we have talked about in class in regards to the allegory of the cave. I felt however, that the way they presented the material had too much latent content that made it difficult to comprehend at times. Effective, nonetheless.
