What is the difference between opinion, belief, and knowledge?
Opinions are a personal belief or judgment that is not founded on proof or certainty. It is a person’s idea and thoughts towards something. Usually an opinion can be backed up by evidence. According to Socrates a true opinion knows what the truth is through evidence and not knowing why other possibilities are false. A belief does not always have evidence to back it up. It is often based from religion and cultural upbringing. In Stevenson page 244 He states that ‘‘Giving reason for a proposition is trying to justify belief in it, and this is a conceptually different thing from giving putative causes for someone coming to believe that proposition. Rationalization justification offers reasons in favor of the proposition being true- and those reasons must be universal, in the sense that anyone who understands them should be capable of recognizing that they are indeed reasons for accepting that proposition.” Knowledge is the truth by evidence and being able to state why other points are false. Kant says there are three types of knowledge empirical- a posteriori, justifiable by perceptual experience/relating to what can be known by observation rather than an understanding of how things work. Next he says analytical- provable by pure reasoning, involving definitions, like logic and math, and finally, Synthetic- combines experience and reason like geometry because it requires intuition of time and space.
2. How do you know when someone is acting rationally? According to Stevenson pg. 241 he says “All that is required for this basic notion of rationality is that the subjects be able to formulate intelligible reasons for some of what they believe and do.” Acting rational is having knowledge based evidence that has reason. We use logic to better understand concepts and points made by another person. One example is Kant’s explanation for being rational “I want B, and I believe that A is the best way to achieve B. Therefore, I should do A.” People act rational when they have good judgement, sensibility and consider all possibilities.
Opinions are someone's belief on what they THINK is right. It could be wrong but if they believe it is right and it can't be backed up with hard evidence then, that is called someones opinion. Beliefs are similar in a way to opinions but they are more brought up by families and religious matters. Someone feels a stronger tie to their belief rather to their opinion. This is due to the fact of someone challenging what their parents and church taught them to be correct, it hits close to home when someone tells you what you were raised on is wrong. Knowledge is where the truth can be proven by hard evidence and facts. It can be fully backed up and proved to be correct. It can also show how counter arguments are wrong.
To act rationally means someone is acting on their knowledge which in return has reason behind the argument. It is being able to act on this knowledge, reason, and logic, on what they believe and what they tend to do as individual.
1. What is the difference between opinion, belief, and knowledge?
An opinion is a viewpoint that is based on one's confidence is what they think is right or true, when in actuality opinions are not always supported by definitive knowledge or facts. Knowledge comes from legitimately correct information that is evidence based and cannot usually be proven wrong. A belief is an opinion in the sense that someone strongly believes it to be right or true, but beliefs are more "accepted" in everyday life. It seems that everyone gets in trouble for having their own opinions, especially if they go against the common census. But beliefs can be more diverse from one person to the next. I know at first look I think that opinions are more influenced by outside factors, whereas beliefs are more tied to someone's inner feelings and spirituality. Beliefs can play a role in one's opinion, as well as their capability of standing by knowledge.
2. How do you know when someone is acting rationally?
When someone is acting rationally, they are conscious of the decision that they are making, after considering all the possibilities and weighing the pros and cons. It is not a decision that is made in the heat of the moment, but instead has a lot of thought and time supporting the decision or action. A rational decision should be free of biases or emotional factors that could influence an irrational decision. Someone acting rationally acts with a justified purpose, or like Laura said knowledge based on evidence to support their rational behavior. I think that acting rationally should also benefit more than just the person making the decision, in the sense that it does at least harm as possible to other effected by the decision or action.
An opinion is a personal belief that is not necessarily proven by fact. Opinions can change. A belief is similar to an opinion but it is usually more rooted in the person. Like opinions they are not always based on facts but beliefs don’t change as easily as opinions. Knowledge is something that people know for sure. It is based on facts and learning. You know that someone is acting rationally when they have reasons for the way that they are acting. If they can describe in a reason that makes sense why they are reacting a certain why then they are acting rationally.
Opinion is a view formed about something that is not necessarily based on fact or knowledge. Belief is confidence in someone or something being true or existing. Knowledge is facts, information, and skills acquired by a person through experience or education; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject. You know someone is acting rationally when they are basing decisions on fact and reason and they are acting as if they would compared to their baseline behavior and not out of the norm.
Opinion is a personal judgment that is formed concerning a topic of discussion. It could be correct or incorrect but it is based on what that person thinks. A belief is a faith filled thought on something being right or wrong. knowledge is when a person is well informed on a topic. they have sought out what is to be true and learned about it.
you know someone is acting rationally by their demeanor while performing the action. They take the time to process what they want to do and they feel very strongly that they are doing the right thing.
1. What is the difference between opinion, belief, and knowledge? Opinions are you own personal viewpoint of stance on a subject- they are our ideas and thoughts. Opinions are what we hold to be true and the right thing, they can be based off of our experiences or knowledge, but they don’t always have concrete facts to back them up and are more easily changed. They are just based off of what we believe in. Knowledge is what we get from concrete information given to us- it comes from concrete facts that usually cannot be changed. Beliefs are opinions that we strongly hold to be true and right. We are often a lot more set in our beliefs than we are in our opinions. Beliefs become how we live our lives and hold personally important- they are more faith based.
2. How do you know when someone is acting rationally? I think someone is acting rationally when they can justify their actions and the act in a sane state of mind- not mentally altered, or mad or sad. They think out what they want to do and can explain why they followed through with it. They base their decisions off of facts and reasoning.
Opinion is what someone suggest about something based on solely one piece of specific information.
Belief is something that a someone strongly feels about a certain topic, situation, or thing.
Knowledge is facts that are taught and proven through experience and teaching form others. Knowledge is something that is gained and grown throughout life.

What is the difference between opinion, belief, and knowledge?
opinion- something you believe to be true, a personal judgment that is not founded on certainty. your ideas or thoughts on something. belief- what you think is true, feeling strongly towards something. Belief also has a strong commitment to the subject whereas an opinion does not. knowledge- what we know to be true based on facts and evidence. this type of information can be justified.
Something is acting rational if they have thought out the consequences of their choices, follow through with those choices, and then being able to justify why they acted the way they did. I think to be able to think rational you have to be in a normal state of mind. For instance, a person suffering from a degenerative disease may not be thinking rational due to their state of mind.
An opinion someone's personal belief on an issue. Their opinion is their stance on the issue. An opinion doesn't have to just consider issues. Opinions can't make up what we think about certain objects or situations and how to deal with them. These opinions can formulated without religious or other outside influences.
Beliefs are formed from an outside source influencing you what to believe. An example of outside sources influencing our beliefs is religion. If these beliefs are in line with our moral and ethical standards we can choose to adopt those beliefs and agree with them.
Knowledge has been developing through out our lives. Knowledge comes from the experiences we go through. If we mess up an opportunity and want to try it again, we can use our knowledge to understand what went wrong the first time, and be more efficient and effective on our second time. Knowledge can be used for negative or positive purposes.
Someone is acting rationally when their actions are in line with moral and ethic, personal and public, codes of conduct. However, its important to consider the situation, the positives and negatives, and the risks vs. rewards.
