Existentialists

Do you find existentialism compelling? Why or why not?  Are you interested in learning more about it?  Recall that we read about the Existentialists in Barry (see blog posts around 12 Feb)

Sartre & de Beauvoir

What do you want to know more about with respect to Sartre?  Can you find videos related to him and/or his work and/or Simone de Beauvoir, the philosopher who was his life-long lover.

Here's a bunch

  1. I find existentialism compelling in that it focuses on our own individual existence, freedom, and choice. Basically existentialism is all about we as humans define our own meaning in life and that we have the freedom to make our own decisions for ourselves that has an effect on our life. So the existentialism viewpoint is compelling because it focuses on the concept that ultimately life is what we make of it and our choices that we make in this life can affect our pathway in life. I'm not really interested in learning more about it, but the main concept of it is interesting in itself.

    Here's a video I found about Sartre:

It's short but too the point. It mainly talks about how our choices are a representation on how we think human beings should be. It goes on to also talk about how we create ourselves through the choices that we make.

    1. I also found this video and watched it. I thought it was very informative and interesting- especially regarding how we 'create ourselves' with the actions we take in our lives.

  2. I've always agreed with existentialism and its general guidelines: a philosophical theory or approach that emphasizes the existence of the individual person as a free and responsible agent determining their own development through acts of the will. I've always been a fan of the underdog and the belief that anyone can change their life with effort and dedication. That's what the American dream is all about. Im interesting in learning more about it.

  3. I like how exploring existentialism is a very personal experience. Like we have learned, existentialism is focused solely on the individual, being independent and free. Existentialism is a subject that should be talked about more in our society, because it addresses topics like avoiding denying yourself of deep thought or avoiding straying from your true destiny in life. Existentialism 'preaches' living your most authentic life, free of the standards of society or those in your personal life, and I think that is the path that everyone should take. It is refreshing for existentialism to also say "hey, life is weird" and no one knows why we were placed on this earth at this time but we were and we need to accept life for what it is and to just live honestly. In a day and age where our society is so caught up in money, and vanity, and being afraid of being different, existentialism pulls us away from conformity and forces us to be our own individual.

  4. I find existentialism to be compelling. Sartre believes that man's existence precedes his essence. Basically, we were not born for a particular purpose and it is up to us to create our own essence. Sartre believed that humans were condemned to be free. He also believed that our thoughts and mental status are chosen by ourselves. We feel the way we make ourselves feel, and respond the way we make ourselves respond. I agree with Sartre because it is truly up to us on how we decide to handle things. I believe that is very difficult for someone to tell you how you should feel about something and how to should act about it. If I were mad, it is truly up to me to overcome that anger and to move on from it. If I am mad, it is not because someone is making me that way, it is because I am choosing to react mad. How we respond to certain situations, therefore it is ever-changing. Sartre disagrees with this because he believes that we can choose to respond differently to a certain situation. I am somewhat interested in learning more about Sartre and existentialism.

  5. I really liked this video. It was really short but it did a good job explaining what Sartre believed love was. Sartre believed that freedom was everything. He said that everyone wants to be loved but by someone who has chosen to love them. He said that the kind of love we seek in another person is different than what we love in an object because an object can’t possess us back. He said that love was conflict. He said that love was hazards. He said that love could be masochism when the lover denies his own freedom or sadism when he treats the loved one as an object. Either way freedom is compromised and freedom becomes a painful struggle. I thought that his theory on love was very interesting

  6. I liked the video and felt I had a better understanding on what Sarte believed. I do believe in existentialism because there has to be more than just what we think. Its about what we feel and do that effects the way we live. I would be ok learning more about existentialism just because I feel like I could evolve my opinion more.

  7. I do find existentialism to be very compelling. I found it to be interesting because it recognizes that humans exist first and then each individual spends a lifetime changing their essence or nature. An existentialist is concerned with finding the meaning of life through free will, choice, and personal responsibility. It is each individual’s own responsibility to find out who they are through personal experience and belief without being influenced by laws, ethnic rules, or traditions. I’m interested in learning more of the concrete concepts of existentialism.

  8. Existentialism is the 20th century philosophy that is centered on the analysis of existence and the way we find ourselves in the world. It states that we are born and spend our lifetime trying to find what we want to become. In Barry’s chapter 3 talks about philosophical, religion and political ideas thorough Sarte and atheist, Kierkegaard a religious philosopher and Heidegger who talks about being and Time, he wants us to focus on the idea that only human beings are aware of themselves with a future. (pg. 62) and self-creation depends entirely on one’s own choices among possibilities one faces. If we are aware of possibilities and choices that we make succeeding and failing are what make us aware of ourselves. I compared these ideas to Ivan Ilyich’s story. He had to come to terms that he was the one dying and that he had not lived his life as he wanted. He missed his opportunity to live a life filled with quality. Ivan’s refusal to face death is how most of us realize we pass up our chance to have a life full of adventure and happiness. I am interested in learning more on existentialism. One reason why I find it compelling is Sarte explanation. He identifies that human beings have no fixed nature or ultimate destination (pg. 55). This idea suggests that we find our ability to act and be free but do not take advantage of this capability. Instead we have feelings of despair, guilt and isolation. We fear death and have anxiety for death because our nothingness, and lack of meaning in life.

  9. I find existentialism to be a very interesting idea- I like how it has a very individualized focus. It holds value in living your life to the fullest- not holding yourself back or submitting to standards set by others. You live your life the way you want, you are free. I think this topic is one that should be talked about more because it regards accepting yourself and your deep thoughts instead of avoiding who you truly are and what your life is going to be- instead of just conforming to the standards others hold for us. It kind of forces us to live our life to the fullest but in our own individual and unique way. This is a topic I would defiantly like to learn more about, I find it very interesting.
I also agree with a lot of Sartre’s ideas, especially regarding freedom and his idea of love. He believes we are condemned to be free and that our thoughts, and essentially our lives in general, are ours to choose. How we choose to react to something is entirely by our own decision, an event can’t make us feel a certain way, we choose to react in that manner. We are responsible for choosing the actions we take. This is a video I found regarding Sartre’s opinion of what love really is (hazardous and conflicting) and I found it to be very interesting.
