What music do you listen to when you are sad? When the world overwhelms you? When there is death around you?
If you are able, comment on what kind of music will be performed at this week's Christian services? It is some of the most beautiful and moving music written for the church.
I listen to a wide variety of musical genres. The music I listen to when I am sad or feeling overwhelmed is just as diverse as my musical taste in general. One of my favorite songs currently to listen to when I am sad is this one: https://youtu.be/1qAZpQllC9w?list=RD1qAZpQllC9w
ReplyDeleteNote that it is specifically this performance of this song I find uplifting- the album version just does not have the same panache. This song, and some others by this group, are helpful to me when I am feeling overwhelmed or there is death around me, too. The variety of instruments they use, including horns, reminds me of a New Orleans style funeral parade where the life of the deceased is celebrated.
Sometimes I like to listen to opera when I am sad or overwhelmed. Soaring arias seem to remind me to breathe deeply and infuse me with life. Digital music with heavy bass lines-preferably with orchestral influence-tend to have a similar soothing effect. This last type of music (and it must be lyric-less) will allow me to focus on studying rather than dwelling on what is bothering me. Sometimes escaping thoughts are not the goal when choosing music. On occasion, I choose to listen to songs that remind me of a person who died or a time when I was sad...and just cry. I recently learned that tears actually have a chemical effect within our bodies that promotes relaxation. So, the relief I feel from listening to music and allowing tears to flow is not just psychological, the effects benefit the physical body as well.
For me, music does not help me cope with the face of death especially when it is someone very close to me. Music doesn't help me ease my mind and it's hard for me to listen to anything really because my mind becomes very distorted when it comes to death. I also tend to struggle with death because it pains me to see people that you see with a smile everyday, walk around in a melancholy mood. Me personally, I love to have a smile on my face and love to make people smile. So whenever i am involved in a funeral, it hits me pretty hard to see everyone hurt.
ReplyDeleteThe main way that I cope with death is that I usually stay to myself and try to be by myself for awhile. I do this so I can get my thoughts together and I hate to let someone see me cry because it makes me feel weak. Now whenever I feel like the world is truly overwhelming to me, I decide to listen to old school R&B or Gospel. These two kinds of genre generally help me because they speak of great stories and tend soothe me. Gospel is an essential one to me simply because it helps show me not to give up and keep pushing on no matter the struggle.
In some cases when I am sad, I like to listen to sad music. It gives me the satisfaction that I am not the only one that goes through hard times. In other cases though I like to listen to more upbeat, and positive music to get me to see the brighter sides of the situations. Music can help you through so many situations, theres literally a song about anything and everything!
ReplyDeleteI mainly listen to country music no matter what mood I may be in, but I do listen to other types of music sometimes as well. Listening to more upbeat music in general can kind of just bring you up because a more upbeat song can probably change the sad/overwhelmed emotion that one may be feeling. Sad/slower songs can also help at times too because the song can connect with what you are feeling at that particular moment. When someone close to me dies I don't know if I can say that listening to music helps me face with death. Sometimes listening to certain songs can remind me of the person that died which can be nice at times but at other times listening to songs that remind me of that person can end up making me make me feel somewhat sad because the fact that the song does remind me of that person and so it brings me back to some emotions that I felt when I had lost them.
ReplyDeleteI also love listening to country music too! i have certain songs that remind me of those I love who have died!
DeleteI have a wide range of types of music I listen to. I generally like country, R&B, Pop, musical theater, some rap and some alternative and rock music, I am really all over the place. However when I am sad or when I am feeling overwhelmed, I generally like to listen to sad music it can be from any genre really as long as it is sad. However I find that most of the time that genre of sad music tends to be country. I also really like to listen to musical theater when I am sad particularly from the musical Wicked because the music makes me feel inspired like I can overcome anything that is in my way. When there is death around me I do listen to sad songs, I think it helps me through the grieving process. I don't think it makes me feel better at the time but it makes me cry more which helps me get all the emotions out, which I guess sort of helps. For example a song I listened to over and over again when my grandpa died was Holes in the Floor of Heaven by Steve Wariner, it still makes me cry to this day any time I hear it. However it does make me feel a bit better, especially when I am missing him because I know he is always with me. I think music can help us get through a lot even if we don't realize it. I did go to church on Easter and the music the church band played was beautiful and made me feel very calm.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, sometimes my music taste can be all over the place! and then there are times when I listen to the same stuff for days. It all kind of depends on how I'm feeling.
DeleteWhat music do you listen to when you are sad? When the world overwhelms you? When there is death around you?
ReplyDeleteThe type of music I listen to when I am sad ranges a lot. I like to listen to upbeat songs to put myself in a better mood and sometimes sad songs because it is comforting knowing someone else can relate. When the world overwhelms me I like to listen to rap, country, pop, pretty much anything just to get my mind of my issues. When there is death around me, I typically don't turn to music. But when death is near me I listen to sad songs and also I try to listen to songs I knew the deceased person liked because it reminds me of them.
I did not attend any church services this past weekend so I am unsure of how the music was.
I agree Brandi, I like to listen to up beat music too, hoping it makes me feel better and it usually does. However, I am to opposite when it comes to death. If a song reminds me of someone who died and it makes me sad I will turn it, because of the mood it puts me in. I know that sounds selfish, but if a song reminds me of someone or something, that doesn't bring joy, I'll usually turn it.
DeleteWhen I am sad, I usually listen to music that has a more sad tone so I can just cry it out. I listen to music that relates to the situation I am going through. Then once I have a good cry, I listen to more up beat music to bring me out of the rut. When I am overwhelmed I listen to soft music that comforts me and maybe music that I can dance to, to release my stress. When I am around death I listen to comforting music that talks about life and how to connect with the dead and understand it.
ReplyDeleteWhen I'm sad, I listen to slow country or alternative types of music. There is many different songs that can relate to all different aspects of an individuals life. I like when the song completely relates to the situation I'm currently in. If I'm sad I will listen to songs that will make me cry. Once I've cried, most of the time I feel a little better. One thing that is a little different is that I don't just listen to sad music but I like to actually play the music on my guitar or piano and sing it myself. When I do this it helps me cope much more than if I were just listening to the artist singing it. If death is around me I like to listen to music that reassures me that life is beautiful and death is normal and just because someone dies doesn't mean that person is gone but they are now in a better place. I find it comforting.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a specific type of music that I listen to when I'm sad I think I just focus more on the lyrics than I would any other time. I definitely try to seek out lyrics that relate to the situation that I am in or what ever is making me sad at the time. When I am overwhelmed or anxious like studying for a test for example I like to listen to instrumental music that has no lyrics just because the lyrics themselves can be overwhelming and I find it comforting and allows me to focus more. But as for sad music I don't think it always has to be a slow tempo song to be sad, like for example when my grandpa passed he requested Old time rock n roll by Bob Seger be played at his funeral. For anyone that knows that song it is very fast and upbeat but even still today it hold a certain sentimental value for me and brings me back to the memory of that day and makes me sad again.
ReplyDeleteI listen to all types of music but when I am sad I usually like to listen to a particular instrument like the piano or violin. I think listening to music helps to calm anyone who might be emotional. When I feel overwhelmed I usually listen to music that I can sing along with to distract me from everything on my mind. When I am surrounded by death I will usually listen to something comforting, such as country or classic rock. Being surrounded by death I would also listen to what is already being played. For example if at a funeral for a Catholic individual they usually have a soloist accompanied by the guitar or piano.
ReplyDeleteWhen my grandpa died, since he was in the military, there was the playing of Taps. For me, this was the part in the funeral where I lost it. Taps is usually played on a bugle and it is just a somber and slow set of notes, but have such a powerful effect on you. I have a distinct memory of chills and then an overwhelming feeling of emptiness, as the Taps echoed.
ReplyDeleteI have found over the last couple of years that I really like to night-drive when something is bothering me, as this helps me clear my mind. My favorite songs for these drives at night are songs that I can only describe as having a powerful beat, which usually start off slow, but towards the end, there is so much emotion and the instruments are just so loud that I have the radio blaring and the music surrounds you in the car. I guess it is just like screaming to somehow relieve your negative feelings. I just like music that provokes emotion and makes you feel things.
ReplyDeleteMusic helps me with everything. It helps me when I am sad, mad, angry, or happy. Whatever mood I am in music is there to help me. I listen to all different kinds of genres of music. Whenever I get super stressed I always plug in my headphones and listen to music. When my cousin died why made a slide show for her layout and whenever I hear any of those songs I think of her. For example we played the songs remember when by Alan Jackson and live like you were dying by Tim Mcgraw and every time I hear those songs I remember her. I like to listen to music to escape when I am really overwhelmed.
I mostly listen to country music no matter what mood I am in. There are a couple of exceptions though, like during workouts I listen to more rap. I think music is a big part in people's life, it effects people's mood, there outlook on life, and I think it also has something to do with their personality. For me country music is the way to go. It relaxes me and makes me think about living life and not worrying about all the little stuff. It reminds me of all my memories with my friends on the lake in the summer, which always puts me in a good mood. There are different types of country songs too listen to as well. If I am sad then I will listen to slower songs and if I am up beat and happy then Florida Georgia Line is the way to go.
ReplyDeleteA song I like to listen to when I'm sad or down is Just Breathe by Pearl Jam. A family member found and played this song when our grandfather died. The song instantly reminds me of him and how great of a person he really was and really takes me to my happy place when I need it.
ReplyDeleteI listen to a variety of music. The choice of music really depends on my mood and how I am feeling that day. However, I mostly listen to country music because I feel like I can relate best to the words. Whenever I am sad I try to listen to more upbeat music that has a good base. The beat is what makes me feel better and energetic. I also listen to country when I am sad because the songs tell a story to me. Sometimes I can relate a song to a person and express myself through it. I believe music can put me in a certain mood. Sometimes rap can make me angry or determined and sometimes country can make me feel happy.
ReplyDeleteElise,
DeleteI really like your idea of how music can sometimes put you in a certain mood. I am like you and listen to mostly country music. However, like you said I think that something such as Rap can make you angry. I am not a fan of hardcore rap, so whenever it comes on on the radio, I immediately get frustrated with it and turn the station. Music really does have an impact on your mood.

What music do you listen to when you are sad?
ReplyDeleteI try and keep my emotion bottled up and do not let them effect my happiness. On the off chance that I am sad I still like to listen to Country music. I basically only listen to Country, and I grew up listening to it. This music is my happy place.
When the world overwhelms you?
On the opposite side of the spectrum, I don't know if I am necessarily overwhelmed when I listen to this genre, but I get into these moods where I listen to EDM/Electropop. I used to be in the band in high school and was the drum major for two years. I was in charge of keeping the beat of all of the music that the marching band played. The beat of this type of music really just lets my mind escape from everything and I can focus on what I need to do and stop worrying about everything so much.
When there is death around you?
I have been fortunate enough to not have to deal with many deaths so far in my life. However, when I am involved, I go back to listening to Country. Like I said, Country Music is my happy place and when I listen to it, I can relate to every single song out there.
I don't like being sad or in a bad mood so I often turn to music to put me in a better mood. So when I'm sad I try to listen to happier, feel good music to make me feel better. I mostly listen to a lot of different genres of music but if I'm just relaxing I'll mainly listen to country. The music played in church leading up to Easter is melancholy and mournful, paying respect to the Passion and death of Jesus. The music on Easter is the exact opposite. It is upbeat, rejoicing, and vibrant to celebrate Jesus' Resurrection and the salvation of mankind
ReplyDeleteMusic is a big help with relaxing me, calming me down or preoccupying my mind. I am always listening to music, whether I’m studying, trying to sleep, or reading a book. I listen to country music basically all the time. Country music old and new has a wide range of topics, so it can really touch on any mood I’m feeling at the time even when I’m sad. Even if I am listening to a sad song, for some reason it just helps me to get all of my emotions out better. When I am mad I will listen to rock music because it has a more upbeat and loud aspect to it which helps to calm me down because it kind of matches how I am feeling. When I have death around me, I listen to a combination of both. My emotions are all over the place, so my music taste is too. When my “second mother” died, they played the song Go Rest High on That Mountain by Vince Gill at her funeral, and for months after that I listened to that song over and over again. It made me an emotional wreck, but at the same time it helped. Even now, 2 years later, whenever I think of her or need her I listen to that song and I feel better.
ReplyDeleteI like to pick music with words that relate to how I'm feeling. usually sad country or rock songs. I feel like the country music genre really embodies emotions well and can relate to any situation someone is going through.
ReplyDeleteMusic has always been a huge and important part of my life. But when I am feeling sad or overwhelmed it doesn't really change the kind of music that I listen to. I enjoy a wide variety of music and usually am always listening to some mix while doing everyday tasks. In the face of death, I don't really think that I change my listening style. I feel that when I am in this situation though, I find myself listening to music less than my normal amount.
