ReplyDeleteI found an article that talked about the traditional practice of jumping fire. For Persians around the world, Nowruz celebrations began on Tuesday night marking what's known as Wednesday Eve. On the last Tuesday night of the old year, Persians typically gather around bonfires to celebrate Chahar Shanbeh Suri, a celebratory ritual of the quest for enlightenment, health, and happiness in the year ahead. Celebrants jump over fires as they chant, "Give me your beautiful red color/Take back my sickly pallor." This ritual is supposed to clean the body of illness and bad/unhealthy feelings that might be in the body—getting rid of that and picking up the warmth of the fire.

Nowruz is affiliated with Zoroastrianism, a religion that predates Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. Some of the main ideas of the "Z" religion influenced these newer religions, including messianism, heaven & hell and free will. Good Thoughts, Good Words, and Good Deeds are the basic tenets of the religion. Nowruz is the holiest of all days in the Zoroastrian calendar. The festivities are in honor of Rapithwin, which is the personification of summer and noonday, the time of the midday meal. Zoroastrians celebrate new life in nature and the anticipated resurrection of the body at the end of times on this holiest of days. Current estimates of Zoroastrians worldwide approximate 2.6 million followers, with most located in India and Iran.
