I think both of these were devastating losses, for different reasons, of course.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite movie for much of my childhood was this arguably weird movie, Labyrinth, starring Bowie. I had all the songs Bowie sang for the movie memorized and then started listening to his other songs. And recently Alan Rickman, who played Snape in the Harry Potter movies, also passed away from cancer. It's a shame that they've both passed away.
And it's even more of a shame that terrorism is bigger than ever today and that innocent people are being murdered for this group to prove a point. It's hard for me to understand that these ISIS suicide bombers can have such a deep faith that they are literally giving their lives for such a corrupt cause. But it's not just their lives that they're taking, it's all the innocent people around them that were just going about their daily lives. It's just crazy and surreal to me.

Both of these were very sad incidences. Growing through cancer would be one of the most awful things. Many of my family members have gone though cancer and it was terrible watching how much pain and suffering they were in.
I can't believe what happened in Istanbul. I find it very scary that terrorist attacks have been coming a common incidence. I hate that innocent people are being murdered. I hope that people will stop all this unnecessary violence.

I think that it is better to die in America. This article brings up the fact that people complain about how people near the end of life are treated in America, because patients are attached to tubes and machines and are subjected to many invasive procedures that might not be necessary. However I feel this is a good thing because what happens if just that one time on that one patient the procedure worked, and it saved their life isn't that worth a try? Plus if the patient didn't want to be going through it they don't have to it is their choice. I think it is a good thing to try to extend the life if a patient wants to that could even comfort them to some level in their near death treatment. Its also better because data shows that less people with cancer died in the hospital in the year 2010 then any where else that was studied, this is better because many people wish to die at home versus a hospital bed. I do see the need for improvement in the intensive care unit where many patients go with cancer more then anyone else, that could be improved. Overall I think it is better to die in America, they will make you comfortable if you wish but they will also fight to save your life and even if it doesn't work that is a nice thing to know.

ReplyDeleteI think America is better because, in the fact that we try many things to help save and care for patients. Yes, sometimes the things tired my not be the best or the prettiest, but it is the patients choice as to what they want to do. Also trying any things can be worth it if you save a patient. So, while we help them in many ways and spend a lot of money at least the patients are dying where they want to and where they are comfortable. In England many of them die in hospitals but that isn't always the best way to go if you cant be in a happy familiar place.

I think that it is better to die in America because that is where my family and friends are.
ReplyDeleteI think it is better to die in America. The article talks about how in 2010, just 22 percent of Americans dying with cancer died in the hospital, a lower rate than 6 other nations that were looked at within the study. This statistic alone says alot because majority of people want to die in the comfort of their own home surrounded by loved ones instead of dying in the hospital. Also, even though the treatments may be costly and not the best, we try our best to try and save patients the best way that we can. It is ultimately the patient's choice what they want to do in the end.

Istanbul ISIS bombing
http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/12/europe/turkey-istanbul-explosion/
Each country has their trade offs when it comes to end of life care for an individual and the treatments and setting for which they are given. While the US had a lower percentage for hospitals stays at the end of life we still had the highest percentage of patients sent to the ICU to receive treatment that may not even improve the quality of life. Better decisions regarding end of life decisions should be considered and invasive procedures that won't necessarily prolong or improve quality of life should be stopped to let the patient rest and be as comfortable as possible in their last moments. We are putting too much emphasis on avoiding death and wanting to perform invasive procedures so we can let our loved ones live an extra week in a comatose state due to the pain killers they are on due to the life prolonging procedure that is unnecessary. More focus should be placed on end of life palliative care and being able to fulfill every wish of the dying person. they should be in a comfortable setting with their families.
ReplyDeleteRather than trying to delay the inevitability of a close death, I agree, we should focus on making the ill more comfortable rather than trying to delay their death. Being comfortable and with family during the end of life is a right that everyone should have. It is also not guaranteed that the means for delaying one's death would not be the ultimate cause of death.

Istanbul Bombing:

It continues to baffle me how bad things are throughout the world outside of our own country. We truly take for granted the simple every day freedom from disturbance which other countries do not have the luxury of; especially in the middle east.
Personally, I would much rather die in the United States due to their advances in medicine and also my proximity to family. If I were to die outside of my home country, I would only think that would cause problems with splitting up assets in the final will. When coming to the end of life, being around family and those who have been there for you are important which is why I would rather die in America.
