End of Life deliberation

Do you have any questions or observations from last week's deliberation?  Do we see some common ground?  What do you need to know more about?

  1. I think we all agreed on most of the topics that were brought up. I would say that we all agreed upon the patients rights. We all had similar thoughts that the patient should be allowed to choose what medical care they do and do not receive. We also agreed a lot on the education aspect of medical care. We all found it really important to be well educated on what the particular patient is facing. Having more information can help with making better decisions. We also agreed that more education on the topic of suicide is a good idea. It will help those facing the issue make a better choice. I think we all still need to know more about the issues that surround Euthanasia. It is such a controversial topic that there is no way we could have summed it up in the little time we had discussing it.

  2. I thought that the deliberation was very interesting and I really enjoyed it. I thought many people participated which made it even more interesting, I liked to hear different people perspective on the matter that makes me think of aspects on the subject I have never thought about before. I thought we had a lot of common ground with the exception of maybe one or two people most of the time. We agreed on patient rights for the most part and how to handle the education of the patients. I felt we also agreed on the humane side of the aspect. I felt that we all agreed that the situation was different from patient to patient for the most part. We did disagree on the suicide clinics is one thing that stands out and I feel that we would need more information on the topic to actually come to an opinion. I would have liked to actually heard peoples views on physician assisted suicide before the debate and after just to see if they changed, we focused more on topics about rather then the bigger picture. However I also don't think that we could have covered such a huge topic in such a little amount of time.

  3. I thought overall that our deliberation was very in depth. I feel that we really got to know they way we each thought. We did have a lot of the topics that there would be just a few outliers to what the group thought, but I think this was a good thing because that allows for more ideas and ways to think about things. I feel if we have different thoughts that it will be more of a learning experience, because it will allow us to hear and see things that we may have never thought of. We did come to a good agreement on people being educated on death and protecting patient rights. I also think it was a great way to start the class because it got people to open up, and I think it will help get rid of the awkwardness of people tip toeing around each other. I do feel though we only got to touch the surface of some topics, that we really could have gone more in depth with many of the topics.

  4. I really liked how everyone had thoughts and personal opinions on each topic presented. I felt like everyone ad very well developed ideas and could justify them. I saw common ground in that everyone agreed that the more education provided to someone on end of life decisions, the better. I would like to learn more about cultural beliefs associated with end of life decisions.

  5. The deliberation was a very interesting experience. I would have to say that for the most part everyone agreed on the topics that were given. It was nice to be able to hear and get to know other people's perspective on the issues. All the perspectives that were shared gave everyone the opportunity to have a different view on the subject that they may not have thought about before. Some things that we all agreed about was that the patient had the right to choose for themselves for the most part. We also agreed that education was beneficial for patients. I think we covered a lot of topics during the deliberation but it would have been better if we were able to go more in depth with each issue to get a better overall understanding and final decision.

  6. There was much more agreement than disagreement within the class. We for sure agreed upon that it should be up to the patient to choose treatment options and that a terminally ill patient should have a great quality of life rather than prolong a life with more suffering. I think the biggest debate and disagreement the class had dealt with Physician-assisted suicide. We could talk about that topic for weeks. Does anyone else think it could be considered flat out suicide since you are requesting a physician to end your life? LOTS of religious and moral implications involved with the issue. What do you all think? I might have to stir the pot and say that I disagree with Dr. Sherron's example of protecting your class from a shooter, sacrificing yourself, and calling it suicide. In this situation, you are willingly going to die for others to live. However, when commit suicide or give the go on physician-assisted suicide you are willingly going to die in order to escape the suffering you have now without saving someone else. I just thought it was a grey area example. Any other examples?

    1. Sometimes the best treatment is none. A terminally ill patient shouldn't have to receive all invasive surgeries available with a slim to none chance at recovering. They should live out their day to the end and not end it short with physician-assisted suicide. Those invasive surgeries could make the quality of life much worse and rougher on the patient.

    2. I do agree with you that I do not think sacrificing yourself to protect people is suicide. I feel like suicide means that the person wants to take their own life and in that situation they don't want to die but they are trying to save other people. They are being murdered not committing suicide.

  7. I really enjoyed the end of life deliberation. It was nice to hear all the different opinions brought into the discussion. I really think topics like these should be talked about and considered and that's part of the reason why I was interested in taking this class. I think that everyone should form an opinion on the points brought up in class before they are in situations where they have to make a decision for a loved one or a loved one is making a decision for you. I thought for the most part we agreed on more than we disagreed. And I thought it was interesting how we all unanimously agreed that patients and students should be properly educated on end of life decisions.

  8. I thought that the end of life deliberation went well. We all seemed to mostly agree on this discussion. I like the topics that were brought up because it really made us think. Some of my beliefs on certain topics did contradict other topics that were brought up. I have different beliefs for different topics. There were a lot of great perspectives that allowed us to think and view things from a different side. I have to say that we all did agree that the patient should have to right to choose for him or herself. I also agree that both the patient and physician should be educated on the topic before any decisions are made. We covered a lot of topics that were sensitive but we were all able to agree in a calm manner and in a mature way.

  9. I thought the class participation was good, which led to good results. I believe we agreed with each other for the most part, and that the topics we didn't agree on were the less important ones. I thought it was cool that we are agreed about the two discussions on how everybody should be more educated. With us all agreeing on that I believe that the majority of everybody else not in our class but that is following this discussion would also agree about it. I think it is considered suicide by definition, but in a lightly manner, which would still bring up issues with religion.

  10. I enjoyed the deliberation. I thought it went well, I enjoyed being able to express my opinions and listen to other students. One observation I made was that people seemed to change their mind about some of the material once we voted on it. One suggestion I have is to vote on each subject or section by anonymous vote, for example each time we vote have everyone send a piece of paper up with their vote instead of by show of hands. The assistant would then be able to tally the votes. I am not sure if that is why the piece of paper was sent out at the end but I think it would have changed opinions. I think it's interesting that every student voted for more education. I am thrilled to see that students appreciate education and find it important for the community as well.

  11. I've never done anything like this deliberation before so I thought it was very interesting to hear people's points of view because even though there were a few with unanimous votes, each person still offered a thought that was unlike the previous. I heard different ways to looking at situations that I had not thought about before. I was honestly also expecting dramatically heated arguments to happen, but it was very calm and collected for the most part. One thing that stood out to me the most about this deliberation was how we all agreed that regardless of the situation, the patient should always be informed and taught about all possible treatments, outcomes, and/or consequences. I know when I go to the doctor sometimes, I feel like the doctor is just giving me a prescription for something without talking about different options, or even really telling me about certain medicines, etc. It very well could be that I just have a weird doctor and I probably should look to switch, but still. Communication and education are important in all aspects of life, specifically when dealing with a person's life.

  12. Last weeks deliberation was the first time I ever participated in a deliberation, so I thought it was interesting to hear everyone's viewpoints. I think it is helpful to hear the way other people approach an issue because we all approach things differently. It makes you think and question where you really stand on an issue. I liked how we all had the opportunity to express our opinion. The majority of the time we took votes, the class was in agreement despite a few of the topics. Overall, we were in agreement when it came to the big important topics discussed, such as patients rights and the quality of life. I would like to know more about physician's assisted suicide so that I could see where I stand more on the issue because it is such a huge topic.

    1. I agree Brandi, a more controversial deliberation would be interesting. I feel the topic of assisted suicide is big enough yet not controversial enough to cause a heated discussion like abortion would. Another deliberation would cool and it would interesting to see how the class splits on that topic.

  13. I think that for the most part we all agreed on most of the topics that were presented to us. I thought that it was very interesting hearing what other people believe and their reasons were. I really liked to hear what other people had to say. In general I really enjoyed the deliberation. I do wish however, it would have been closer to the end of the year. I wish that because we could have learned more about the topics more in class before saying what we believed. I think it will be interesting to see how peoples’ opinions and beliefs will change with more information provided in class. I also think that it is such a huge topic to discuss and I feel like a lot of people had different interpretations which made stating how we felt difficult.

  14. I feel like the deliberation went really well. A lot of people responded and got into the conversations going on. For the most part we all seemed to have very similar views, especially regarding patient rights, with a few disagreements. I thought it was really interesting to be able to hear other peoples opinions both from the people I knew very well and those I didn't know at all. I do feel like if we had this deliberation towards the end of the semester, it might have gone differently because we would have had more insight into some of the topics covered. There was a lot of room for interpretation with some of the topics covered which I felt made it hard to resopond. Overall I think this experience was very educational eye opening.

    1. I think doing another deliberation towards the end of the semester with similar topics would be interesting. This would give us a chance to see if any of our beliefs or opinions changed given the semester we had in this class.

  15. I liked the deliberation and felt that for the most part everyone was involved which helped it continue. Everyone offered differing opinions which kept the conversation flowing and I liked how we voted after each topic which helped wrap up and conclude what we were talking about. I also liked how peoples opinions and points were written on the board as a reference to build your own views. I would like if we did this again for a class.
